The spine is worn at the head and foot with a 1/4 inch tear at the head and 1/2 inch tear at the foot, both on the rear fold. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Illustrated Edition. SEUSS, Dr. [pseudonym of Theodor Seuss GEISEL] (1904-1991). And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. Eau Claire, Wisconsin: E. M. Hale and Company, 1937. Special Economy School Edition, issued in the Cadmus Books series by arrangement with The Vanguard Press. Quarto (4to); [32] pp. Original pale green pictorial cloth, decorated in orange, black, and white, with the "white shorts" first issue point; decorative Cadmus Books patterned endpapers. Written and illustrated throughout in color and black and white by Dr. Seuss. An early school edition of Dr. Seuss's first published children's book, originally issued by The Vanguard Press in 1937. The story introduces Marco, whose ordinary walk home is transformed through his imagination into an increasingly elaborate procession along Mulberry Street. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with light age-toning and scattered foxing and spotting, principally to the title page, preliminary leaves, and margins. Small numerical notation at the lower corner of the title page. Binding remains sound. Original cloth rubbed, soiled, and spotted, particularly to the rear board, with wear to the corners and spine ends and a small area of label residue near the foot of the spine. A well-preserved example of this early Dr. Suess in Good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover; Illustrated.]. SEUSS, Dr. [pseud. of Theodor Seuss GEISEL] (1904-1991). (illustrator).

First edition; 36-page pamphlet, wire-stitched, wrappers and contents printed in red and black, wrappers very faintly toned, minor paperclip indentation, short closed tear to the final leaf of text, a very good, fresh copy. First edition, first printing of this scarce early work by Dr. Seuss, with 'U.S. Government Printing Office: 1943-543637' on the inside rear cover as indicated by Younger & Hirsch, though bound with two staples rather than one. A lovely copy in unusually nice condition. Theodore Geisel (1904-1991) began his career as an advertising illustrator, and his first children's book was published in 1937. He was heavily involved in the US effort during the Second World War, publishing over 400 editorial cartoons and producing posters for the Treasury Department and War Production Board. In 1943 Geisel was appointed commanding captain of the Animation Department, First Motion Picture Unit of the Army Air Forces, charged with producing training material for US troops. That same year Germany blocked the Allies' access to quinine, and this booklet was designed to educate service members about malaria prevention strategies such as bed nets, repellants, and the destruction of breeding places. The name of the mosquito character, Ann, is a play on the genus Anopheles. Younger & Hirsch, First Editions of Dr. Seuss Books 78.

In this take on the genre of the alphabet book, Seuss presents, instead of the twenty-six letters of the conventional English alphabet, twenty additional letters that purportedly follow them.
