The list of 14 books on the rear flap is roughly in reverse order of publication and starts with Yerle the Turtle. The two "Beginning Reader" books includes The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. They were both published in 1958, suggesting a 1958 or 1959 printing for this book. Size: Between 11"-13" - Quatro (4to). 48 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight and bright. There are single small light red marks on the first, second, fourth and sixth pages (growing smaller and lighter) and light brown marks at the bottom margin of pages eight and nine. Hardbound in glossy paper over boards. The corners are sharp, but are worn at the tips (the bottom corners are worn to the board). The spine is worn at the head and foot with a 1/4 inch tear at the head and 1/2 inch tear at the foot, both on the rear fold. The unclipped (295/295) dust jacket has a large (2" by 1 1/4") chip at the head of the spine, an oblong 1 inch hole at the edge of the front panel next to the spine and is missing 1 1/4 inches at the foot of the spine. There is a large 4 inch closed tear at the right side of the front panel (not affecting any text) and wear along the edges. The dust jacket is now protected in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. The story introduces Marco, whose ordinary walk home is transformed through his imagination into an increasingly elaborate procession along Mulberry Street. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with light age-toning and scattered foxing and spotting, principally to the title page, preliminary leaves, and margins. First edition, first printing of this scarce early work by Dr. Seuss, with 'U.S. Government Printing Office: 1943-543637' on the inside rear cover as indicated by Younger & Hirsch, though bound with two staples rather than one. A lovely copy in unusually nice condition. Theodore Geisel (1904-1991) began his career as an advertising illustrator, and his first children's book was published in 1937. He was heavily involved in the US effort during the Second World War, publishing over 400 editorial cartoons and producing posters for the Treasury Department and War Production Board. In 1943 Geisel was appointed commanding captain of the Animation Department, First Motion Picture Unit of the Army Air Forces, charged with producing training material for US troops. That same year Germany blocked the Allies' access to quinine, and this booklet was designed to educate service members about malaria prevention strategies such as bed nets, repellants, and the destruction of breeding places.
