Sheppard, a neurosurgeon in Columbus, Ohio, came to notoriety when his wife was murdered in 1954 and he was accused and found guilty of being the killer. A then-young lawyer, F.Lee Bailey, took his case in 1961 and by 1966 Sheppard was free and Bailey's reputation as one of the most famous trial lawyers in history began. The case is said to be the inspiration for the TV series and subsequent movie, "The Fugitive".
