The author of this book, Dr. Van Gelder, has hit upon a particularly attractive and worth-while demarcation in choosing as his subject the relationship between Dutch artists and their own country, as expressed in their work. For frequently in their best works these painters and draughtsmen portrayed their country as they saw it -- in landscapes, town scenes and interiors of houses with their occupants -- so unwittingly providing irreplaceable pictures of the time in which they lived. A good reading copy.
