Ebenezer Cobham Brewer (1810 -1897), was the author of 'A Guide to the Scientific Knowledge of Things Familiar', 'Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable', and 'The Reader's Handbook', among other reference books. This is the undated 6th edition, publshed in the 1860s. An ink inscription to the ffep is dated February, 1868. Interior is generally clean, pages white, but there are small, light pencil marks throughout in the margins. Pencil notes to the rear blank endpaper. Tight, square binding, however, there is black tape strengthening the rear hings, and, the front hinge has been glued [?]. The black cloth binding shows almost no wear. Gilt title and decoration to the spine. Externally looks quite attractive. Unpacked weight, 300g. NB - Postal Rates shown by ABE are frequently incorrect. Old pencil inscriptions on front free endpaper; some foxing/toning to leaves. Binding firm. Publisher ads on leadoff pages 1-2 (immediately preceding title leaf) and six unnumbered pages of publisher advertisements at rear. OCLC cites British editions as early as 1848 with the earliest American edition being published in New York in 1850.
