The front free endpaper has an insert stuck in it: 'In grateful appreciation of eight years service as Commissioner of the Cardigan District 1936-1944'. Brown stain up the hinge on title page and on a few other pages where the stitching is exposed. Foxing on last few pages. Text is clean, with just the odd mark here and there. Binding is good. The dustwrapper is heavily rubbed with discolouring all over, has wear to the edges and corners, with some small rips and chips to the edges, small chip to middle of spine and back fold, has a clear protective cover. The yellow illustrated boards are lightly rubbed with some bumping to the edges, small rip to headband. Tanned and mild foxing to page edges, The binding is firm. The pages appear clean and crease free with tanning. This book has 171 pages. All in all a nice example of this book.

James Henry Dowd was born in 1884. He worked as a draughtsman, etcher and painter. Dowd was a regular contributor to the The Daily Graphic and in 1906 began to have his work published in Punch Magazine. Dowd provided the drawings for several books including the highly acclaimed Important People (1930) and People of Importance (1934).

There is minimal shelf ware, but there is a small mark on the bottom of the back board. The pages are in a very good condition, with black and white pictorial illustrations/pencil drawings throughout. There is slight spotting on the top of the page ends. There is only the front half and flap of the jacket remaining. The back isn't with the book. Noted as poor due to this. The overall condition is very good.
