Essay by Anders Kreuger in the English original and Lithuanian translation. Printed in tritone on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Vilnius, Lithuania to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is outstanding in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Jonas Dovydenas' "Another Country Also Mine". In Lithuanian: "Sugrizimas I Palikta Krasta". Stunningly beautiful photographs of his native Lithuania by the immigrant/citizen who has made the American West his very own country, his masterpiece being "Nevada, A Journey" (1987). This collection of photographs, taken between 1996 and 2002, on the other hand, is a homecoming and a pilgrimage-of-sorts: Dovydenas fled Lithuania with his family just before the Soviet occupation. He has been gone for a very long time, not entirely by choice. Throughout his work, Dovydenas' approach remains unapologetically nostalgic and celebratory at the same time. His hymnal images are authentic, eloquent, and moving without being sentimental, recalling - and worthy of - the work of Antanas Sutkus, perhaps the iconic Lithuanian photographer of our time. An absolute "must-have" title for Jonas Dovydenas collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: ALL other copies available online have very serious flaws (even if signed) yet are priced as though they had collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 150 pages. Published in 1987. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs. Jonas Dovydenas' finest achievement. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Jonas Dovydenas and Under-Mountain Press: Oversize-volume format. Khaki linen cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Jonas Dovydenas. Essay by Gail Buckland. Printed in tritone on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Meriden-Stinehour Press in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jonas Dovydenas' "Nevada, A Journey". The Lithuanian-American photographer's serenely beautiful and often magnificent landscape images and portraits of so-called "Ordinary Americans". They evoke nothing less than the essential, "trail-blazer" aspect of the national character. What do we think of today when we say "Nevada"? Las Vegas. And yet, much of the state remains the "American Cowboy" West amid the harsh desert. As the title says, one must be willing and want to make this journey regardless of where one comes from originally (Dovydenas himself fled Lithuania with his family just before the Soviet occupation, and has journeyed throughout the United States ever since). He is unapologetically nostalgic and celebratory about What We Have Lost. He captures for posterity, in these stark landscapes and stoic faces, the physical manifestation of what is, or was, not just pioneering but noble and heroic about America. These hymnal photographs of men and women, boys and girls (even babies), in solo and group portraits, comprise a forgotten America, and are authentic, eloquent, and moving. A major body of work, worthy to stand alongside Richard Avedon's "In The American West" (1985). An absolute "must-have" title for Jonas Dovydenas collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by Jonas Dovydenas. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a late-modern American photography classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws yet are priced as though they had collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 136 tritone plates. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JONAS DOVYDENAS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0961916303. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards have light wear present. If the Lithuanian-American artist, whose fierce study of landscape and national character has been going on for many years, saw in these scenes and faces the incarnation of what is, and was, right with America, he never insists in these stark photographs. It is for the viewer to see and judge all that takes place inside and outside these exposed souls in their magnificent and decadent home state of Nevada, and come to some conclusion as to whether they may stand for a hardihood that was once more widespread, and if so, what hope there is in their persistence. A landmark book for students of the American west and of the photograph as record and hymn. E-117; 4to 11" - 13" tall.…
