Three essays deal with Plautine themesone on his audience, the others on the long literary traditions of the Amphitryo and the Miles Gloriosus. Two deal with the influence of Senecaon Corneille and the French baroque theatre, and on Shakespeare and the Elizabethan stage, which is reconsidered in the light of our new understanding of the drama of violence. Recent discoveries have made possible a revaluation of Menander. The last article reviews the post-war history of the Westminster Latin Play, the best known of its kind in England. / Contents Introduction DONALD R. DUDLEY, University of Birmingham I. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Latin Historians: E. A. Thompson, F. W. Walbank, T. A. Dorey, P. G. Walsh, J. Campbell, G. M. Paul, E. Badian. Edited by T. A. Dorey & Donald R. Dudley. Published by Basic Books in 1966. Hard cover with dust jacket (DJ). See photos for condition. DJ is toned/darkened, especially notable on the white back side, where dark smudging and speckling are most visible. Ink rubbed off in spots on spine and edges. Small rips, chips and creases in DJ at top/botom of spine and corners - and to a lesser degree along other edges. Hard cover boards have some bumping/dings on top edges. Board corners have some light wear, with some very minor fraying of fabric. Fabric sunned around edges. Pen and stamp on front endpaper. Toning on endpaper. Brownish stain in gutter of front endpaper. Previous owner made markings in the first ~half of the text block in pen and pencil - mostly line markings in the margins, but a few words also written in place. The markings are mostly concentrated in chapter 2, where they are on most pages, but very scant elsewhere in the text. Otherwise, text block is clean and crisp - pages appear clean and clear of highlighting, notable damage or staining. Binding overall good, but loosening a bit with age, with some minor widening in the gutters in a few spots where thread is visible.
