ITEM CONDITION: near fine. The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library item or remainder. The wraps are in near fine condition. 8 x 5, 130 pages, 9 ounces XX [From the back cover] El Morro bears eternal witness to the courage and endurance of adventurous men. Fifteen years before the Pilgrims set foot on Plymouth Rock and some two thousand miles to the southwest, the Mexican governor of New Mexico was inscribing his name, the date and the purpose of his passing, on the sandstone face of a mesa. That mesa, now called El Morro or Inscription Rock, belongs as much to our country's traditions as the other better known rock. During three centuries, that southwestern mesa was gathering inscriptions made by brave and adventurous passersby. The author has made a point of finding out about the Rock and the people who camped there. Her investigations have resurrected many facts, some new, some known but forgotten. They will, she hopes, help to focus attention on that Rock, now a National Monument - both from those who have visited there and those looking forward to discovering it. Educated primarily in science, Bertha Dodge began her writing with popular interpretations of science and science history, then wrote about history in its own right. With a daughter and grandchildren residing in New Mexico, she makes frequent visits there. Signed by Author(s).
