Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: fine. Reissue. Fine, fresh, unread copy in equally fine dust jacket. First printing of this reissue of the 1945 original. Hardcover. Map endpaper. 307 pp. with index. With a new introduction for this edition by Nicholas Rankin. A foundational, non-fiction memoir of the Dunkirk evacuation of the British forces across the Channel in late May-early June in 1940. Divine piloted one of the "Little Ships" , a fleet of more than 800 small vessels including fishing boats, yachts, tugboats, ferries and private boats (the smallest was a mere 15 feet) that were requisitioned and used to evacuate some 336,000 Allied soldiers trapped on the French coast. A highly detailed, day-by-day, study of the evacuation of Allied soldiers at Dunkirk, May 26-June 4, 1940. The author combines eye witness reporting and authoritative source material to describe the men, ships, planning and strategy of the evacuation, and provides quite a bit of necessary minutiae. The appendix includes a complete list of all the ships that took part in Operation Dynamo. The author, A. D. ''David'' Divine (1904-1987), was himself a participant at Dunkirk with the small boats, where he crossed the channel three times and was wounded on the final voyage. He went on to write several books on military issues, as well as novels, and after the war was the defence correspondent of the British Sunday Times.…
