Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition, First Thus. EX-LIB/UNCIRCULATED Copy. Loan pocket to front; library stamp to all text edges. Text/BRAND NEW & Bright. Blue line boards/NF. DJ/None as Issued. First published 1866, Montana Post Press, Virginia City, MT; this is a facsimile reproduction of the original issue. Excellent primary source historical document. Pertinent to note the full subtitle reads: "Being a correct and impartial narrative of the chase, trail, capture and execution of Henry Plummers, Road Agent Band., together with accounts of the lives and crimes of many of the robbers and desparadoes. The whole being interspersed with sketches of the life in the mining camps of the "Far West"; forming the only reliable work on the subject ever offered the public by Prof. Thos. J. Dimsdale". Henry Plummer was the ignoble sherriff who was hung. A passionate narrative in defense of the citizen-formed group of vigilantes took control back from "road agents" running towns as criminal enterprises in Montana in the 1860s following the Alder Gulch gold strike in particular, and, in general a description of life in the early West.
