Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the rich history of higher education for African Americans in the early 20th century, offering a comprehensive look at the experiences of college-educated Black Americans. Through a meticulous analysis of college catalogs, letters from officials, and detailed questionnaires sent to hundreds of graduates, the author provides a nuanced perspective on the challenges and triumphs of this demographic. The book examines the development of Black colleges and universities, tracing their growth and assessing their adherence to educational standards. The author meticulously explores the curricula of these institutions and the vital role they played in filling the void left by inadequate public education for African Americans in the South. The book further illuminates the realities faced by Black college graduates, analyzing their career paths, socioeconomic status, family dynamics, and the obstacles they encountered in a society still rife with racial prejudice. It also delves into the attitudes of other colleges toward Black students, revealing a complex and often contradictory landscape. First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st. Softcover.ÂFirst edition. 137pp. Printed gray wrappers.ÂMinor chipping on a few leaves. Corner of title page discreetly reinforced with archival tape. This volume, issued under the patronage of the Trustees of the John F. Slater Fund, records the proceedings of the 18th Atlanta University Conference, held on May 26, 1913. Directed and largely authored by W.E.B. Du Bois, the series of annual Atlanta University Studies (1896â"1914) represents the first sustained, data-driven investigation into the social, economic, and educational conditions of African Americans in the post-Reconstruction South. Conceived by Atlanta University president Horace Bumstead and carried forward by Du Bois, these conferences brought together scholars, educators, and reformers to address pressing issues of Black life with empirical rigor, years before the professional discipline of sociology was fully established in the United States. Though Du Boisâs name often appears only as editor, his hand shaped nearly every aspect of these publications. Today, surviving copies are scarce; most were later rebound, making intact examples like this especially desirable. This 1913 report stands as both a landmark in African American scholarship and a tangible artifact of Du Boisâs groundbreaking sociological project at Atlanta University. Very rare. Only one record of this selling at auction over the past 20 years. Store case 4.
