En théorie, lunité de lempire était maintenue, sous les deux souverains associés, comme elle avait existé au ive siècle, comme elle devait théoriquement subsister durant la plus grande partie du Ve siècle. En fait, de plus en plus lOrient et lOccident se séparaient. Un empire romain dOrient naissait, dont la capitale était Constantinople. -- ÉTENDUE ET LIMITES DE L'EMPIRE DORIENT -- Quelle était à la fin du IVe siecle l' étendue de cet empire ? Quelles en étaient exactement les limites ? Un document officiel, la Notitia dignitatum, probablement rédigée dans les premières années du Ve siècle, permet de sen rendre compte avec précision. -- Lempire était partagé en deux préfectures du prétoire, celle dOrient et celle dIllyricum. Chacune de ces préfectures comprenait un certain nombre de diocèses : cinq pour la préfecture dOrient, à savoir : Orient, Égypte, Asie, Pont, Thrace ; deux pour la préfecture dIllyricum : Macédoine et Dacie. Dans chacun de ces diocèces étaient réparties un certain nombre de provinces, à savoir : 15 dans le diocèse dOrient (Palestine, Phénicie, Syrie, Cilicie, Chypre, Arabie, Palestine seconde, Palestine salutaris, Phénicie du Liban, Euphratèse.).
