Wraps, xvii, 38 pp.; 21 x 26 cm oblong; illustrated with black-and-white and color reproductions of California bookplates. In Very Good condition. Orange wrappers, with a small nick to the top edge at the front corner and mild shelf and edge wear. Bindi…ng tight. Pages clean and unmarked. The Book Club of California's 2006 membership keepsake, compiled by Robert Dickover, reproducing California ex libris (bookplates) drawn largely from the Club's own exhibitions of 1913, 1953, and 2002 together with plates from other private and institutional collections. An introduction traces the history of the bookplate from Durer and the old Mexican fire marks forward, followed by eighty-one plates with commentary, arranged by owner, among them General Mariano Vallejo (the first bookplate printed in California), Phoebe and William Randolph Hearst, James Strohn Copley, David O. Selznick, W. Atlee Burpee, and film director George Cukor. Designed and printed by fine-press printer Peter Rutledge Koch with Jonathan Gerken, the text set in a special letterpress version of Giovanni Mardersteig's Dante with Greco Adornado and Rialto Italic for display, color offset by Creative-Litho, bound by Taurus Bookbindery. Dedicated to book collector Michael Harrison (1897-2005).

Review: George Cukor's, a Landacre wood-engraving, is one of the standouts; there are many. And some are just fun.

Colophon in the back: "California Bookplates was designed and printed for the Book Club of California by Pe…ter Rutledge Koch with the assistance of Jonathan Gerken. The typefaces are a special interpress version of the Giovanni Mardersteig's Dante for the text with Greco Adornado and Rialto Italic for display." Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Light sunning and offsetting and a few almost imperceptible scratch marks on front cover. A small dampstain on back cover. A Fine copy. Excerpt from the Introduction: "The 2005 keepsake of The Book club of California is a response to the continuing widespread interest in and, indeed, fascination with bookplates. The universe of the subject matter of bookplates is immense, and the number of them put into use or collected in the more than five centuries of their existence in the Western world is great. In order to make the task of putting this keepsake together manageable, the initiator of the project decided to restrict the bookplates illustrated in the keepsake to those that were in the exhibits of The Book Club of California of 1913, 1953, and 2002.".
