Profusamente ilustrado com uma bela vinheta representando uma batalha campal e 39 gravuras desdobráveis em extratexto com representações de máquinas e armas de guerra da Idade Média (arietes, catapultas, entre outras) e da Idade Moderna (como, por exemplo, canhões, obuses e bombardas), bem como planos da entrada em posição dos regimentos e das guarnições (com as graduações dos comandos assinaladas) e as ordens unidas individuais, de companhia e de regimento e as ordens de batalha das divisões dos exércitos. Único volume publicado desta obra, correspondendo aos elementos de táctica. Apenas existe um exemplar na BNP. O autor seguiu nesta composição o sistema de ortografia regulado pela pronúncia, pouco mais ou menos conforme às doutrinas e exemplo de Verney e do Padre Theodoro de Almeida. Compêndio escrito para servir na Academia Real de Fortificação, Artilharia e Desenho. Versa apenas a parte tática e as partes primeira e segunda da obra, prometidas para depois, nunca chegaram a aparecer. É também sua a tradução de algum, ou alguns dos tomos da Architectura Militar de Antoni, impressa em 1790 para servir de compendio aos alunos da Academia supracitada. Mathias José Dias Azedo, nascido em Lisboa em 1758, morreu em 1821. Assentou praça aos 22 anos em 11 de Março de 1780. Promovido a primeiro Tenente de infantaria com exercício de engenheiro, por decreto de 2 de Junho de 1783. Capitão com o mesmo exercício em 10 de Dezembro de 1789. Major com o mesmo exercício em 4 de Abril de 1795. Tenente coronel em 4 de Maio de 1800. Coronel em 23 de Maio de 1801, pelo merecimento, inteligência e valor com que se houve no governo e defesa da praça de Campo Maior durante a invasão espanhola na Guerra das Laranjas. Brigadeiro em 3 de Julho de 1801. Marechal de campo aos 7 de Julho de 1810. Tenente general em 10 de Julho de 1813. Foi muitos anos Lente da Academia Real de Fortificação; Comandante geral do corpo de Engenheiros desde 16 de Dezembro de 1810 até o seu falecimento: Inspector do Arquivo Militar em 21 de Fevereiro de 1812: Encarregado da inspecção das linhas de defesa da capital e praça de Peniche em 3 de Junho de 1814, e novamente em 27 de Dezembro de 1816, Membro da Junta do Código penal militar, por decreto de 17 de Maio de 1816, servindo até 20 de Fevereiro de 1820, dia em que foi concluído o projecto do mesmo código, mandado pôr em execução por alvará de 17 de Agosto de 1820; Conselheiro da guerra por decreto de 17 de Dezembro de 1817, Membro do Governo provisório aclamado em Lisboa em 15 de Setembro de 1820, e depois Secretario da Junta provisional do Governo supremo, desde o 1º de Outubro d?esse ano ate 26 de Janeiro do ano seguinte, Inspector das fortificações do reino por portaria da mesma Junta do 1º de Janeiro de 1821. Fully illustrated with a beautiful vignette depicting a pitched battle and 39 fold-out engravings hors-texte with representations of war machines and weapons from the Middle Ages (battering rams, catapults, among others) and the Modern Age (such as, cannons, howitzers and bombards), as well as plans of the regiments and garrisons moving into position (with the ranks of the commands marked) and the individual, company and regimental united orders and the orders of battle of the armies' divisions. The only published volume of this work, corresponding to the elements of tactics. Only one copy exists in the BNP (Portuguese National Library). The author followed in this composition the spelling system regulated by pronunciation, little more or less in line with the doctrines and example of Verney and Father Theodoro de Almeida. Compendium written for use at the Academia Real de Fortificação, Artilharia e Desenho (Royal Academy of Fortification, Artillery and Drawing) . It only deals with the tactical part and the first and second parts of the work, which were promised for later, never appeared. He also translated some of the tomes of Antoni's Architectura Militar, printed in 1790 to serve as a compendium for the students of the aforementioned Academy. Mathias José Dias Azedo, born in Lisbon in 1758, died in 1821. He joined the military at the age of 22 on 11 March 1780. Promoted to first lieutenant of infantry with engineer drill by decree of 2 June 1783. Captain with the same drill on 10 December 1789. Major with the same drill on 4 April 1795. Lieutenant colonel on 4 May 1800. Colonel on 23 May 1801, for his merit, intelligence and valour in the government and defence of Campo Maior during the Spanish invasion in the War of the Oranges.
