The Girl Who Killed to Save (Nongqause the Liberator) - H. I. E. Dhlomo First Edition, Lovedale Press [ca. 1935] Considered to be the first play in English to be published by a Black South African writer. The play dramatises the 1856-1857 Xhosa cattle-killing movement and famine, a tragic historical event sparked by the prophecies of the young girl Nongqause who prophesied that the sacrifice would cause the return of their ancestors and drive out British colonists. H. I. E. (Herbert Isaac Ernest) Dhlomo was a founding figure of South African literature. Green card wraps printed in black, 8vo, pp. [xii], 46, [2]; Good condition, Foxing throughout, light sunning, foxing, and soil to wraps.

Softcover. Condition: Very good. No jacket. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Original blue wrappers printed in black. The scarce first edition of this play by one of the founding fathers of South African literature, Herbert Isaac Ernest Dhlomo, taking as its subject the prophet Nongquase who triggered the devastating Xhosa cattle-killing movement and famine (18541858). The Lovedale Press was born from a mission created in the 19th century just north of Alice in the Eastern Cape; it primarily produced religious publications but did also champion black writers and political thinkers, including among its alumni journalist Daisy Makiwane, poet Isaac Williams Wauchope, musician & composer John Knox Bokwe, and anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. Minor creasing to corners of covers, overall very good. Book.
