Ostensibly, with the ownership signature o…f Robert Lytton (according to an old bookseller's description which is pasted in). Better than Robert Lytton is a one-page A.L.s. laid in from Henry Folger to Dr. Horace Howard Furness, dated Feb. 19, 1912: "I find among our miscellaneous books a volume of Horace. It seems to be the first volume of a set. Doubtless you have it." Indeed, such is the case. At the end of p. 504: "Finis tomi primi." Mills College Check List 477; not in Riedel-Horatiana.

With two engraved bookplates, the first of John Fiott, St. John's College, Cambridge, dated 1806; and a second armorial bookplate unidentified. Fiott (1783-1866) was the famed British astronomer, one of the founders of the Royal Meteorological Society, and president of the Royal Astronomical Society 1861-63. This is the first Desprez edition of Horace, a durable work that was still being printed well into the 19th century. Little is known about Desprez, a French scholar and a member of the Society of the Sorbonne, other than his edition of Juvenal & Persius Flaccus first published in 1684, and this lasting edition of Horace. Handsomely bound in a vellum binding with a spectacular gilt stamped panels depicting a statue holding a staff and shield with an owl and a duck, etc., at the foot and the words "Hagae Comitis" written at the base of the statue which is a town in the Netherlands(The Hauge). spine decorated and ruled in gilt, title in ink in second panel, wanting front endsheets, a very nice copy with just a bit of toning to page edges.
