Alabama was by far the most successful of the Confederate raiders, so much so that in the two years that she preyed on Northern commerce she became something of a legend. Her famous Captain Raphael Semmes later acknowledged that the Alabama's successes were due largely to the energy and resourcefulness of his executive officer, First Lt. John McIntosh Kell. Kell was an experienced, proven officer, a veteran of the Mexican War and of Admiral Perry's voyage to Japan. As a Confederate officer Kell served first on the raider Sumter, and then on the Alabama, but always in the shadow of Captain Semmes, who commanded both vessels. Kell, a reticent man, was apparently content to let his captain take the credit for their joint successes. Now, at last, Professor Delaney has given us a vivid portrait of the real Kell. The interviews Kell granted to news reporters during the 1880's and 1890's (usually neglected by historians) present a lucid and revealing account of life aboard the raider, in contrast to his memoirs, published in 1900 as Recollections of a Naval Life, consisting of oral reminiscences, often rambling and digressive, written down by Kell's wife. To learn about the young Kell, Professor Delaney had to turn to the earlier records~letters, journals, and diaries~and supplement these with other contemporary material. From these sources a different picture emerges, one showing the many sorrows and tribulations which the old man had pushed into the background of his memory. Few of Kell's war letters ever reached Georgia (his journal sank with the Alabama in 1864 off the coast of Cherbourg, France), but contemporary records indicate that the cruise was not the romantic adventure that people imagine . It was hard and tedious, and there was little glory for Confederate officers in destroying unarmed merchant ships. Much of the responsibility, including the disciplining of a largely mercenary crew, rested on Kell. To Kell, the experienced officer, duty and loyalty were prime considerations, and these qualities he displayed in full measure. Twenty years in the United States Navy had produced the man Semmes needed as his "right hand," and Semmes had no cause to regret choosing Kell.
