The Delafield commission was sent to Europe to document the latest developments in military tactics, engineering and technology. The commissions assignment was achieved by the richly detailed reports and illustrations. There is a great deal of technical information on the use of fortifications and artillery during the Crimean War (1853-1856). The reports of the three commisioners, Major Delafield, Major Albert Mordecai and Captain George McClellan were issued separaely.This is the report covers advances in military engineering, logistics, ordinance, etc. The fine lithographic plates in this edition reach the level of art. The pamphlet lists the rankings of each class when looking at the 3rd class of 1860, George A. Custer of Ohio is ranked last. The pamphlet lists academic staff who went on to significance in the Civil War including Godfrey Weitzel, John M. Schofield, Oliver O. Howard, and William J. Hardy.
