Als Dramaturg und stellvertretender Direktor des Burgtheaters 1832-41 engagierte er namhafte Schauspieler und führte vorwiegend publikumswirksame Schauspiele (u.a. von Bauernfeld und Halm) auf. D. schrieb selbst zahlreiche Dramen und gilt als Begründer der sogenannten "Künstlerlustspiele".
