Bound in contemporary red half morocco, raised gilt spine. boards covered with marbled paper, marbled endpapers, spickled edges. Very fine copy without any stains or foxing ( unusually fine). This album can take its place among the highlights of French 19th c. periodical illustrations. It was produced when the art of woodcut illustrations had reached a virtuosic climax. A few years later, at the end of the 1860's woodcuts were replaced by zincographic reproduction methods, later by photographical methods.The album is divided in 9 sections : Views from Italy ; Spain ; France ; Africa ; Russia ; England. And Portraits (with a double page plate of the Garnier opera, under construction) ; humor ( cartoons ) ; Parisians; army life. It gives a fine survey of French iconographic intrests. All the best illustrators of the period are represented (see names above). Very fine stainless copy.

Le texte, très varié, est dû aux plus grands écrivains de l'époque. Un des plus célèbres illustrés de la période romantique. Lequel ''ne devait comprendre à l'origine qu'un seul volume''.
