Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Chinese are known for a variety of things, among them are proverbs, dumplings, chopsticks, massive armies, ancient teachings, and a Great Wall. In 1941, China became host to a group of American civilian pilots, who were also known for a variety of things, among them aviator skills beyond compare, shenanigans, handsomely decorated planes, camaraderie, and victories. The proverb above caught my attention as I was preparing information for this story. When I volunteered to write about the American Volunteer Group (AVG) Flying Tigers, I had no idea who they were, or what they accomplished so to say now that I have learned "a lot" is an understatement. I have become totally immersed in their story. With so many personalities and achievements to write about, it was a challenge to establish a starting point. I enjoyed the style and swagger that LIFE magazine was able to capture in the 1942 article about the team, and their focus was on the pilots. But the behind-the-scenes characters, the support personnel such as medics, cooks, aviation mechanics, navigators, and other team members received limited attention, so they will become the focus of this view of the Flying Tigers. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. What began as a term referring to a group of artists and writers who came of age during World War l became the phrase used to describe the entire generation. It originated from a statement that writer Gertrude Stein made to a young Earnest Hemmingway soon after the end of World War l: "All of you young people who served in the war. You are all a lost generation."Hemmingway wrote about the exchange years later in A Moveable Feast, a memoir about the struggles he endured as an expatriate journalist and writer in Paris during the 1920s.Other writers and artists who Hemmingway worked with in Paris, France, included in the original cohort of the Lost Generation included Wilfred Owens, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sylvia Beach, Gertrude Stein, E.E. Cummings, Max Eastman, T.S. Elliot, Ford Maddox Ford, James Joyce, and Ezra Pound. The term "lost" was used to describe the feeling of disenchantment and discouragement felt by many, especially artists, writers, and philosophers after the debauchery and death of World War l. With the loss of principles, morals, ethics, faith, and traditional standards came a bend toward self-indulgence, pleasure-seeking, rebellion, and for some, lack of purpose. The literature of the 1920s reflected the sarcasm, pessimism, and disappointment of their generation.War is the common denominator. The mental and physical wounds, the atrocities of combat, and the struggle to return to a normal that no longer exists has been handed down from one generation to the next. Every generation riddled with war is a 'Lost Generation."Although the effects of war were great, so were the actions of those who served. There were heroes, both men and women, who served their countries with honor and distinction. The following stories are a testament to the extraordinary heroism and intrepidity of those who served in the United States Armed Forces. All were born between 1883 and 1900, coming of age during World War l and returning to a "Lost Generation." This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Generation X is the name chosen for the cohort of individuals born between the years 1965 - 1980. Called by some the "Forgotten Generation," and the "middle child" by others, they are considered resourceful, independent, self-reliant, creators of the DIY movement, and basically anti-fads and fashion. 84 million babies were born into Generation X, with a population of 88.5 million Gen Xers in the US at the time of the 2020 Census. They saw the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the first space shuttle in 1981 and the tragic explosion of Challenger five years later. They survived two energy crises, 1970s and 1980s, all while being exhorted by the U.S. Government to "Just say NO" to illegal drug use, during the height of the War on Drugs.Profoundly affected by the 9-11 attacks, the perspective towards military service and national security among Generation X sends a message of communication and collaboration among the branches of the service, making the military more effective and efficient, even if the number of individual personnel is less.As leaders, there is a sense of pride and purpose similar to their Silent grandparents, that is a unique quality of Generation X. Heroic acts, servant leaders, and selfless determination are evident in each of the following true stories about members of Generation X. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Silent Generation, also referred to as the Traditionalist or Builders Generation, is the name chosen to describe the cohort of society born between 1928 and 1945. Typically considered cautious, frugal, conformist, and non-confrontational, the name Silent applies to the majority. As the children of the Greatest Generation and the parents of the Babyboomers, they were known for their traditional ideas and cautious approach to life.In society, the Silent Generation may have started out meek, and conforming, but by the early 1960's, as they were firmly into adulthood, rebellion, protests, and innovative ideas were changing the face of America. Jimi Hendrix, Muhammad Ali, Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Noam Chonsky were all members of the Silent Generation. They became heroes of the Babyboomers and were known for their radial voices.Silents became the generals of the Cold War and experienced some success. They were good at keeping their word and keeping secrets, especially when it was their patriotic duty. The following stories about Military Heroes born between 1928 and 1945 are unique, awe-inspiring, and factual. The soldiers were brave, driven, loyal, serving with intrepidity and courage, and devotion to their fellow soldiers. They were doing their patriotic duty as representative of the Silent Generation. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Greatest Generation is the name chosen to describe the demographic cohort born between 1901 and 1927 and becoming adults from 1919 to 1945. Many of this generation were children during the Great Depression, and teenagers or young adults during the recovery period that followed. Hardships and adversity tend to produce stronger, more resilient people and a robust, relentless military force. The impact on the military became the most evident with the United States entry into World War ll. With the Selective Service Act of 1940, men between the ages of 21 and 45 were required to register for the draft, the first peacetime draft initiated in the U.S. By the end of the war, over 45 million men had registered. Over 16 million Americans served in the armed forces during World War ll, and the majority were from this generation. As of 2024, 66,000 of the 16 million American who served in were still alive and in their late 90s or early 100s. Considered largely conservative on social and economic issues, foreign policies, moral and legal issues, most claim they continue to become more conservative as they age. With 90% of them registered to vote, their impact on society continues to be felt. Some criticize the generation for its conservatism, while others praise their sacrifices. The following stories are true accounts of the heroic actions for service members born into the Greatest Generation. This item is printed on demand.
