First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. No Jacket. First Edition. 77 pages. 210 x 155 mm. Lacks spine strip and hinges loose. "The Drama of Canticles," also known as "The Song of Solomon," is treated as literature in this translation from the Hebrew, and according to the presumptuous author in his forward, "the fragmentary condition of the text called for connective tissue." The success of this work is "the result of the (translator's) labor to rediscover the cast of characters; to give each one his part, and then to develop the story by reasonable supposition." The author/translator also claims to have made several original discoveries regarding the characters and structure of the story, as well as bringing the purpose of the last chapter into a relationship with the rest of the book. The author is concerned that Christians may think ill of Jews because some of their ancestors worshiped the golden calf, and so he further states that "The Calf Cult of Israel" is appended to the dramatization of Canticles "to induce a more generous spirit in the hearts of Bible readers when their minds may chance to contemplate the shortcomings of Israel." Interestingly, the book is dedicated to Woodrow Wilson, "Governor of New Jersey." Brown paper-covered boards. Spine strip is not in good shape, Gilt titles on front in Hebrew and English.
