This book is a collection of episodic stories narrated from the point of view of a young Chinese man, called Small Me, who serves as a house servant to various foreign families in Shanghai. Through comical mishaps and cultural misunderstandings, the foreigner's reckless habits, arrogance, and disrespect for Chinese customs contrast with Small Me's unwavering politeness and dignified attempts to educate and assist these ex-pats. Each chapter highlights a different theme, such as camaraderie, honor, and friendship, as Small Me weaves a colorful tapestry of inter-cultural encounters and attempts to navigate the complexities of clashing civilizations. By shedding light on the prevailing views and social attitudes prevalent in early 1900s China, this book prompts introspection on the lasting effects of colonialism, while celebrating the quiet resilience and enduring spirit of the Chinese people.
