Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. [1-3]+4-45 pages with charts and three folding maps. Folio (13 4" x 10") bound in half leather over original publisher's boards with label to cover. Published in 1859 as Appendix 4 to the Seventeenth Volume of the Journals of The Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. It had previously been published by Dawson in 1858. (Sabin 18958) Includes a letter by Bishop Tache (the bishop of St. Boniface) on the Red River settlement and the 'half-breeds' in the settlement. Second edition. The maps Route by Road & Navigation for Connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans' is colored, two very long folding maps; one showing the 'Profile of Route by the Grand Portage and Pigeon River from Lake Superior to Rainy Lake', and the other being a 'Plan Shewing the Region Explored by S. J. Dawson and his party between Fort William and the great Saskatchewan River'. Simon James Dawson was a Canadian civil engineer and politician. In 1857, as a member of a Canadian government expedition, he surveyed a line of road from Prince Arthur s Landing (later Port Arthur, now part of Thunder Bay, Ontario) to Fort Garry and further explored that area in 1858 and 1859. His report greatly stimulated Canadian interest in the West. In 1868, he was placed in charge of construction of a wagon and water route following his earlier survey by the newly formed federal Department of Public Works. The Dawson road was traversed in 1870 by the Wolseley Expedition under the command of Colonel Garnet Wolseley sent to preserve order during the first Riel uprising, the Red River Rebellion. Condition: Rebacked to style, corners bumped, front end paper toned, maps over folded else very good.

folio. pp. 47. 3 folding lithographed maps (2 partially coloured) contemporary half roan (shaken, head of spine torn). First Edition of the French Translation. The expedition, on which Dawson served as surveyor and naturalist, examined the route from Port Arthur on Lake Superior to Fort Garry (Winnipeg) and explored the country from Portage la Prairie to Lake Winnipeg, Lake Winnipegosis, the Saskatchewan River, Swan River and Fort Pelly, returning by way of Fort Ellice and the Assiniboine River. Dawson was one of the first to attract attention to the suitability for colonization of the territory west of the Red River. His report includes discussion of the Hudson's Bay Company's establishments and the native tribes of the region. Issued as part of the appendix to the Journal of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada; a more extensive version with two maps was published the previous year. Gagnon I 1064. Lande S607. First Edition
Hardcover. First Edition of the French Translation. pp. 47. Folio, measuring 25 x 34 cm. Bound in contemporary three-quarters maroon leather over original cloth boards with title label pasted to the upper-board; fresh endpapers. An exceptional copy, professionally restored, complete with all three folding maps, and plans called for in Peel. Light rubbing to cloth extremities, which, otherwise remain in an exceptional state, rare occasional spot of foxing to some of the leaves, and maps, one very short closed tear to the lower-left margin of the second fold-out. A stellar copy, perhaps the best we have handled of this foundational work of early Canadiana. Published in 1859, this report details the pivotal 1857 expedition commissioned to survey the territory between Lake Superior and the Red River Settlement, extending westward toward the Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Rivers. It was authored primarily by civil engineer Simon James Dawson, who later established the eponymous "Dawson Route" and superintended troop transports during the 1870 Red River Expedition. Assisting him was co-author Alexandre-Antonin Taché, a prominent Catholic missionary, future Archbishop of Saint-Boniface, and later a key mediator during the Red River Resistance. A foundational primary source documenting the Canadian West, its topography, travel routes, and, crucially, the political climate of the Red River Valley in the immediate years prior to Confederation.
