Condition: FINE. First printing. A gorgeous portrait of the island and peoples of Antigua, with text by Gregson Davis and illustrated with photographs by Margo Davis, maps and reproductions in color of historic paintings and vintage drawings. As the authors comment, this is a "straightforward view of rural Antigua, of village yards and tilled plots where the descendants of slaves labor with strength and ingenuity to extract a life of dignity and meaning from an eroded landscape of unfullfilled promises and fragmented hopes." While this is centered around the photographs, it also contains much on the history of the island - the sugar plantations, slave uprisings, emancipation and more. Warmly INSCRIBED on the half title page by both the author and photographer, and dated in the year of publication. A beautifully produced large folio, one of an edition of only 5000 copies - 141 pp plus colophon and final photograph. Very near fine in brown cloth with a photographic inset on the front cover, in a good dust jacket (rubbing, small chip at top of dj spine).
