Those familiar with the seedlings of both say that the leaves are linear in the Lewisia but broader in Claytonia is not very conclusive. The rootstock has also been referred to as a corm; Sampson Clay (1937) deftly avoided controversy by calling it a ''little round earth nut," a common reference for geophytic food plants in the Old World. Tubers of L. triphylla were eaten by the native peoples of the American West. Lewisia triphylla near Cisco, California. The basal leaves of Lewisia triphylla become dormant by flowering time, when the plant devotes its strength to reproduction. The whorl of stem leaves beneath the flower gives them the appearance of mingling with green leafy ribbons. The white to palest pink flowers are usually few, but on a flourishing plant a stem may bear as many as a dozen, with three or more stems per plant, all rising 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) above the ground. These flowers present quite a charming picture, as Marcel LePiniec once described them, in patches bordering tiny snowmelt rivulets in a mossy alpine meadow, their effect." ; FINE/FINE. Book.
