Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Of a different stamp was David Noble, neighbor of the Grays and the son of impoverished new comers to Hamstead. From the very beginning, David was ambitious; he wanted money, and above all he wanted to become a doctor, and subordinated to both these hope (illustrator). Age discoloration around page edges; front cover/page slit where binding is, Book Pages are very good, no rips or tears; When Sylvia Carey came to the Grays' ramshackle homestead with a past to forget, her warmhearted generosity meant new lives for them all. The run-down farm and the old house became, under her imaginative direction, well-managed, thriving establishments. Only Austin Gray, the brilliant yet bitter son, whose penchant for the dissolute ways of Wallacetown so scandalized the village, refused her impulsive friendship- until that night when Sylvia, badly injured and faint with shock, sketched for Austin, with a bitterness matching his own, the sordidness of her own past. For both, that terrible, storm- filled night was an end- and a beginning. For Sylvia, it presaged the kindling of a tender, overwhelming passion she had never thought possible. For Austin, it meant spiritual fulfillment, broadened horizons and an all pervading love of a type he had not known before. But the difficulties were enormous, each was quick-tempered and proud, and the sins of both came back to haunt them. Their struggles, their temptations, their triumphs- how they twice lost and found each other- make a powerful story which you will not soon forget. Of a different stamp was David Noble, neighbor of the Grays and the son of impoverished newcomers to Hamstead. From the very beginning, David was ambitious: he wanted money, and above all he wanted to become a doctor, and subordinated to both these hopes was the desire to possess the lovely Jacqueline, half-French granddaughter of a wealthy Hamsteader. Forcibly separated from her by the irate grandfather, it was not until David had attained both his prior ambitions that he found Jacqueline once more, in France. No longer was she the fragile, shy, tender child whom he had worshiped so long, but an exquisite, sophisticated, worldly-wise woman, tremendously weary of her mode of living. Again David's luck held; and the romance flowered anew, until Jacqueline's own spirit and David's insane desire for total possession drove them apart once more. His subsequent bitterness, the truth about himself which finally came to him, his frantic efforts to find Jacqueline and the near-tragedy which occurred when he did are the warp and woof of this profoundly moving story.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 24 pages. Illustrated. John Nevil Maskelyne (22 December 1839 - 18 May 1917) was an English stage magician and inventor of the pay toilet, along with many other Victorian-era devices. Working with magicians George Alfred Cooke and David Devant, many of his illusions are still performed today. [Davenport's and Maskelynes at L. Davenport & Co.,] Ira Erastus Davenport (September 17, 1839 - July 8, 1911) and William Henry Davenport (February 1, 1841 - July 1, 1877), known as the Davenport Brothers, were American magicians in the late 19th century, sons of a Buffalo, New York policeman. The brothers presented illusions that they and others claimed to be supernatural. (VM6).

Condition: Very good. - 32 words typed on a cream-colored 10-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide sheet of Congress of the United States / House of Representatives letterhead. Signed "Dave". The top edge of the letter is very lightly creased. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. Treen writes to Congressman Seymour Halpern thanking him for writing on the occasion of Treen's reelection: "You were very generous in your remarks and I will endeavor to justify your confidence".American attorney and politician David C. Treen [1928-2009] grew up in Louisiana as a Democrat, but joined the Republican Party in 1962. In 1972 he was the first Republican in modern times to be elected to the House of Representatives from Louisiana. He represented Louisiana's Third District from 1973 to 1980. In 1979 he was elected as the first Republican Governor of Louisiana since Reconstruction. His election was a sign of changing party affiliations among white conservatives in the state who had comprised a majority of the population since at least 1900. Treen served as governor from 1980-84, losing his bid for reelection to popular rival Democrat Edwin Edwards. The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.
