Bound in publisher's brown cloth, gilt lettering and o…rnamental head/tail banding to spine; debossed framing to boards. Plain white endpapers. [iv], [9], 10-281, [282-288] blank; two additional unpaginated sheets of illus. Frontispiece (author illus), preface, contents (see photo), list of illus, dedication/list of subscribers. Condition notes: an excellent early (possibly first) printing, with the following flaws: Spine ends rolled, corners bumped and frayed. Light wear and rubbing to cloth boards. Edges moderately toned. Two former owner entries: "G.N. Lyman/March 26, 1874" in pencil to rfep, and "Lyman" to first blank page (likely George N. Lyman, 1817?1898, of Ripon); and a penned name, address and date from the 1960s to tail ffep. Else unmarked. Pages lightly tanned. Ripon, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, was the birthplace of the modern Republican Party. Mapes founded the city in 1849. We personally inspect every book we offer.

Some chipping at the spine ends, especially at the foot. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. There is a little damping in the gutter at the front of the book near the bottom. At the rea…r the damping at the gutter is heavy. Throughout much of the text block there is no damping, but it grows towards the rear of the book. Collates complete with the frontis portrait and two other illustrations. David P. Mapes (1798-1890) was born in Coxsackie, New York and had several ventures in New York and Pennsylvania before he moved to the Wisconsin Territory in 1844 and helped found Ripon, WI. He also help found Ripon College. The Republican Party was founded in Ripon in 1854. Quite Scarce. Not in Howes.
