Interprétation et compréhension Ce livre a pour but de permettre aux jeunes initiés du 4e degré du Rite Ecossais Ancien et Accepté de réaliser l'importance de ce degré en vue d'acquérir les connaissances de base nécessaires pour entreprendre une bonne démarche initiatique au sein du Rite. Dans cette optique, il est apparu utile à l'auteur de rappeler les origines de la Franc-maçonnerie et de souligner l'intérêt de procéder à une approche herméneutique des voies suivies par le Rite. La notion de Tradition est mise en relief comme base des civilisations ainsi que celle revêtant un caractère initiatique spécifique à la Franc-Maçonnerie. L'importance des notions de devoir, de justice et de vérité est soulignée et Gérard Jarlan a choisi, pour fixer les idées, de rappeler l'oeuvre de quelques personnages reconnus comme essentiels pour la progression de la réflexion qui doit prévaloir au 4e degré du Rite Ecossais. Il rappelle aussi que l'accession aux grades dépassant le 3e degré du REAA implique la présence d'une ascèse dès le quatrième degré. Le but de cette étude est de mettre en relief des aspects essentiels afin que cette ascèse se réalise clans les meilleures conditions.
