A filmed version of the National Theatre Company play originally directed by Glen Byam Shaw, which was based in turn on the 1900 play by August Strindberg. In their isolated home on the coast of Sweden, an aging, mentally ill ex-military captain engages in vicious battles of will with his wife, a former actress whose marriage ended her career.
