In Concresco, David Galjaard explores the social and symbolic significance of the numerous concrete bunkers built in Albania during the rule of dictator Ever Hoxha and the role they now play in the modern landscape. Hoxha, who was in power from 1944 to 1985, had approximately 750,000 bunkers constructed between 1967 and 1985 on the pretext of Albania needing to prepare for a possible attack from overseas, though ultimately, no actual conflict occurred. Concresco was awarded the Paris Photoâ"Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award, 2012. The Photobook: A History III, p210.

Text: Slavenka Drakulic & Jaap Scholten Design: Katie McGonigal Publisher: Self Published, 2012, First Edition Softcover, 213 x 340 mm, 168 pages Condition: Mint Language: English Limited edition 750 Copies Signed Concresco won the Photobook of the year award by Aperture at Paris Phot…o 2012. The book is more than a visual witness to the ravages of communism; it's a wistful ode to the 750,000 bunkers marring the Albanian landscape, anchored deeper in the history and collective unconscious of the country than in its land itself. Unadorned and taken from the distance of an outside observer, David Galiaard's photos perspire the bleakness of the fall out of a 50 year long dictatorship. Autografato dall'autore.
