Amato Lusitano pertence à galeria dos médicos portugueses de origem judaica que, compelidos a abandonar o País por via da intolerância e das perseguições étnico-religiosas de então, fizeram no estrangeiro brilhar bem alto o nível da medicina lusa, tratando reis, Papas e a nobreza europeia. Tendo nascido em Castelo Branco, em 1511, estudou Artes e Medicina em Salamanca, uma das mais prestigiadas universidades da época. Regressado a Portugal, sob a iminência da instalação da Inquisição joanina fugiu para Antuérpia, à semelhança de muitos outros judeus portuguêses. Depois, sempre por razões da sua origem e fé matriciais, tornou-se um æjudeu erranteÆ. Refugiou-se em Ferrara, Ancona, Pesaro e Ragusa, mas terminaria os seus dias em Salónica, então sob domínio do Império Otomano, onde os judeus eram bem acolhidos e podiam praticar livremente a sua religião. Foi um brilhante e empenhado médico humanista - "um dos maiores clínicos portugueses de sempre", no dizer do historiador Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão. Deixou obra escrita de grande envergadura e saber: "Com as suas Sete Centúrias de Curas Medicinais estabeleceu o nível mais alto de medicina clínica experimental e filosófica do século XVI" (Boris Catz).

Neste livro, os particularismos locais daquela representação de religiosidade popular são integrados e comparados com o fenómeno da religiosidade em geral ao longo do seu devir histórico. Depois, os conteúdos manifestos e latentes daquele rito paralitúrgico são analisados sob as ópticas da Religião Popular, do Simbólico e da Antropologia Psicanalítica. Sendo Maria Madalena a personagem principal da Festa da Santa Cruz da Aldeia da Venda, as suas controversas representações na cultura e no imaginário popular são aqui aprofundadas e analisadas.

The second part, eikon, additionally includes the iconographic study of some vases made possible thanks to the contributions of various specialists. Collected papers examine ancient Greek vases in Portugal through two approaches: scripta explores mythological, literary, and cultural themes, while eikon provides an iconographic analysis. The study includes vases from Myths, Gods and Heroes and others of historical importance, including non-figurative examples.
