Jesse proves to be a forerunner beyond the world of sports. In 1950 he was named the all-time greatest track-and-field star by the Associated Press; in the bicentennial year 1976, President Gerald R. Ford awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and, in 1987, President Jimmy Carter honored him w/the Living Legends Award.
