Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Charles Darwin - The Descent of Man 1882 - Prize Binding London School of Dental Surgery - Awarded to Mr S. C. Buckland - Boards Fully Detached Second Edition, revised and augmented. Fifteenth thousand. With Illustrations. Freeman 955. Format: Small octavo / Crown 8vo. xvi + 693 pp.…+ 32 pp. publisher's catalogue at end Illustrations: With 78 wood-engraved figures in the text. Darwin specifically credits the zoological artist T. W. Wood in the preface for new drawings and improvements done "from life". Many additional figures are taken from A. E. Brehm's Thierleben (Animal Life) and other natural history sources. Binding & Provenance: A handsome contemporary full brown calf prize binding issued by the London School of Dental Surgery (part of the Royal Dental Hospital of London). The upper board displays a large, ornate gilt central emblem in a quatrefoil design with the wording "LONDON SCHOOL OF DENTAL SURGERY" surrounding the school's crest. Gilt rules to spine and borders. Marbled endpapers. Original prize label on the front pastedown (identical school emblem): "Prize in Dentist Surgery & Pathology 1882. Awarded To Mr. S. C. Buckland" Signed by the Dean: "J. Francis Van Underwood". Founded in 1859, the London School of Dental Surgery was the first institution in Britain to offer formal academic training for dentists. It was established alongside the Royal Dental Hospital of London (opened 1858 to provide free dental care to the poor). By 1882 - the exact year of this prize - the school was a leading centre of Victorian dental education, training the next generation of professional dentists under the University of London system. Prize bindings like this one are exceptionally scarce and represent a direct link to the birth of organised dental education in the UK. Condition: Both cover boards are fully detached (but completely present, with the gilt emblem intact). The spine covering remains attached to the text block. Leather on the boards is rubbed and scuffed with edge wear and minor surface loss, typical of a 140-year-old prize binding that has seen use. Text block is complete, tight, and square with no loose or missing pages. Paper shows light age-toning and occasional scattered foxing/spotting (mainly to prelims and endpapers), but overall clean and perfectly readable. All 78 illustrations are present and in good condition. This is a solid candidate for professional restoration (rebacking or recasing) - the text and illustrations are excellent and the provenance is exceptional. Description / Notes: A genuinely scarce and attractive association copy of Darwin's classic work on human evolution and sexual selection. The book was formally awarded as a student prize in the exact year of publication (1882) by one of London's leading dental schools. The combination of Darwin + contemporary prize binding from a Victorian medical institution + T. W. Wood illustrations is uncommon and highly appealing to collectors of Darwiniana, history of science, and history of dentistry/medicine. Offered as-is due to the detached boards, but far superior to a plain reading copy thanks to the documented 1882 provenance. T. W. Wood (illustrator).

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. 2nd Edition. RARE, SINGLE VOLUME. 78 noteworthy Illustrations by "Mr. T.W. Wood." The biggest fault is a 1 1/2 x 1 inch cut out from the top of the spine. The others are consistent with the advanced age of this piece of history. The first page has the following in ink in beautiful script: Francis Wood…bridge. Cambridge Mass 1897. On the title page is written beautifully: F. Woodbridge 1897. The first two pages have pulled away from the spine together. A sticker seems to have been removed. and there is a 1 1/4 inch chunk out of the top tip. The spine has pulled away but is still attached by exposed hinges. The hard covers are deep maroon with attractive, black designs front and back. "The Descent of Man" is in faded gold gilt on the spine. The tips and spine ends are worn. Rubbing occurs. The inside (except for the two pages just mentioned and pgs. 275-294 attached only by one of the binding strings) remains tightly bound, age-toned with two indentations that appear as a slight wave vertically. In the preface, Darwin notes that in this second edition of his 1971 publication he was able to "introduce several important corrections" and "new illustrations." He further states: "My conviction of the power of sexual selection remains unshaken." Complementary postage and delivery confirmation to the US. Exact cost to international buyers. No hassle, 100% money-back guarantee.
