They belong to the order Calanoida, a group of small crustaceans that live throughout the water column and are among the most important grazers in the ocean. While spinocalanids share many features with other families of animals in the Calanoida, they are set apart by a unique collection of characteristics. These include a diagnostic morphology and many specializations, including modifications to their mouthparts and swimming legs. Understanding these features brings critical depth to the study of the Spinocalanidae and their ecological roles.
