Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) was an English portrait artist known for being the fourth president of the Royal Academy. A self-taught artist, he received his first Royal commission in 1790 and remained one of the most prominent and successful artists of his day until his death.After his death, his friends asked Thomas Campbell to write a biography of the artist; however, he passed on the duty to D. E. Williams, who published these volumes, which are not considered to be entirely accurate, but remained the only biography of the artist until 1900.Illustrated: volume I contains eleven plates and volume II contains thirteen plates, including one folding plate in colour.Containing the three original illustrations intended for the work, as well as numerous besides, some having been rebacked.A first edition.Complete in two volumes; scarcely found complete. In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart, with a little occasional rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, in particular to the head of volume I. Armorial bookplate covering a previous armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume, along with a library stamp. Internally, firmly bound.
