Condition: New. 2015 N & M Press reprint SB 131 pp, platesPublished Price £11.50 The Home Guard, familiar to us all from the antics of Dad's Army on the TV, in fact performed a deadly serious role - guarding infrastructure and communications, and releasing the regular Army for more front-line work. This is one of the Home Guard's Unit histories, giving a detailed account of their history - from the Government's first appeal for volunteers onwards. The Home Guard's history stretched from the early anxious days in the summer of 1940 when a German invasion was hourly expected to the preparations for D-Day when the boot was on the Allied foot. It is a story of amateurism transformed into increasing sophistication and better weaponry; and a professional and patriotic dedication to often humdrum duty that united Great War veterans with youths awaiting the call-up to the regular forces. When they were finally disbanded in November 1944 the Home Guard deserved the thanks of a grateful nation that they had truly served and helped to save.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. A bright green, cloth bound, hardback book, with gilt titles on the spine. No dust jacket. This wonderful book is in really good condition and as its a used book, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. No specific published date listed, therefore i have taken the date from the foreword by the Brig-General from the Cavalry Club 8th Sept 1942. Also noted was the "8th thousand" from the title page. The page prior/next to title page has two photographed horses head (Rich Gift & Mahmoud) and below is a facsimile signature by the prolific horse artist Alfred J. Munnings. 212 pages all intact, and nice tight binding. Inside are several newspaper cutting of famous, huntsman, show jumping and jockeys. In my own humble opinion this is a very underrated and under valued book that deserves to be preserved for future generations and beyond.

Hard Back. Condition: Good. First Edition. 356 Pages Indexed. Tan boards with brown lettering to front board and spine. Good condition considering age. Pages are white, tight, and free of marks. The front endpaper is holding well while the back endpaper has begun to split but still holding well. Illustrated with 33 black and white photographs, five maps of which four are fold out, and seven full page diagrams. In writing this History the author has done a service to his countrymen particularly those who served in the Corps, and who feel that the part they played in the Great War is but little known to the general public. As a work on Cavalry Tactics it will be of some value to the student of Military History, and, if it does nothing else, it must demonstrate to the world that the horse-soldier is just as valuable in modern warfare as ever. The whole of the operations in Palestine and Syria, under General Allenby, were text-book illustrations of the perfect combination of all arms, both in attack and defence, and the last operations in this theatre, which led to the total destruction of the Turkish Arms and the elimination of Germany's Allies from the War, could not have been undertaken without large masses of Cavalry. The author served throughout the whole of the operations of which he writes.
