This book is volume 7 of the Documents Scientifiques de la Mission d'Ollone. Henry Marie Gustave d'Ollone (1868-1945) was a French soldier and explorer, brother of the composer Max d'Ollone. A Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, he organized and participated in exploration missions in Africa and Asia. After several trips to Asia, he was put in charge of a scientific mission to study the non-Chinese peoples and cultures of China, and the minorities that cohabited within the Chinese Empire. He left from 1906 to 1909 with a team of specialists, and the expedition covered more than 8,000 km on horseback, in regions that were still little or not at all subject to central power, in an unstable geopolitical context. He reported on geographical, archaeological, ethnographic and linguistic studies and published numerous maps, photos, studies and books, including Research on Chinese Muslims, published in France in 9 volumes in 1912. The present volume has been prepared with the assistance of Jean-Baptiste Marie Budes de Guébriant (1860-1935), a French priest of the Foreign Missions of Paris of which he was the Superior General, missionary in China and Vicar Apostolic of Kientchang from 1910 to 1916. It is devoted to the writings of the non-Chinese peoples of China, and contains four dictionaries "Lolo" and "Miao Tseu". The book has been re-backed and re-cased in later (probably mid 20th century) maroon cloth covered boards. There is no titling on the spine or boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. The contents are tight and clean with many of the tables remaining unseparated along the top and/or fore edges. The map at the end of the book has a tear and some creasing on the top edge that has been repaired and reinforced on the reverse with document repair tape. The blank page following the front free endpaper has two inscriptions, one dated 1929 and the other 1970. Easily removable label on the spine.
