Panel edges rubbed and torn at the top hinge; spine likewise rubbed, and torn at the ends. The title and Contents leaves are creased at the margins and substantially foxed, with the plates remaining strong and showing light marginal foxing. BL, Oxford and V&A only on Copac; not recorded on OCLC. Only two copies have appeared at auction since 1973. Beneath the title on the front board is printed: 'A story book for holiday hours'. Seventeen short tales; 'The simple and instructive little stories in this volume, and its companion, "The Two Doves," are translated from the German. The author is a lady, who loves children, and has written many books for their entertainment, as well as for their improvement'. Joseph Cundall, 1818-1895, known for his sumptuous children's books (and as the publisher of the first printed Christmas card in 1843), was described by William Pickering as 'the publisher with the most devoted concern for book design in mid-nineteenth century England'. Cundall went on to be one of the twelve original members of the Photographic Club in 1847, and a founding member of the Photographic Society (later the Royal Photographic Society) in 1853.…
