paperback. Condition: Very Good. University of Washington Press, Seattle [Published date: 1989]. Exhibition catalog. Softcover with French flaps, 112 pp; chiefly color illustrations; 30 cm. In very good condition. Glossy illustrated paper covers have light shelfwear and scuffing. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Not ex-l…ibrary. Published in conjunction with exhibitions organized by John Berggruen Gallery (San Francisco), Thomas Gibson Fine Art Ltd (London), and Roger Ramsay Gallery (Chicago). Distributed by University of Washington Press. A collection of prints and drawings of California artist Joseph Goldyne (b. 1942), who is noted for his role in the revival of the monotype medium. [From front flap] The prints and drawings of California artist Joseph Goldyne explore impressions from experience, art, and nature that hold special meaning for the artist: books on shelves, flowers, the human face. Educated as a physician and an art historian, Goldyne is best known as one of those who pioneered the revival of the monotype medium. He creates works in which contemporary ideas coincide with images of classical inspiration. Eighty-five color reproductions guide the reader through the artist's oeuvre. His early works juxtapose pictorial details from Old Masters and from modern art. The artist orchestrates these compositions to remark uniquely on contemporary aesthetics and criticism. In later still-lifes and landscapes, the artist demonstrates a refinement of composition and color that reveals his vision of the meaning inherent in everyday objects. His portraits of artists and writers show Goldyne's technical fluency and his regard for the historical figures who have helped shape his life and art. Paul Cummings, president of The Drawing Society, editor of Drawing, and formerly adjunct curator of drawings at the Whitney Museum of American Art, contributes an essay that traces Goldyne's growth as an artist. Cummings delineates the major influences on Goldyne's development with specific remarks on the origin and composition of many of the illustrated works. A biography and bibliography on the artist are included. Cover: The Greater Grows My Light/The Further That I Fly (detail), 1989, pastel over monotype: drypoint and monotype (page 63).
