Add to basketCondition: Fair. Pages age-browned. Leather binding that appears to be original. Corner torn off page 91, minor amount of text missing (end of last four lines on page). Minor marginal tearing on a few other pages but no interference with text. Title page has part torn where date would have been. Appears to be 1661 edition. The E…nglish medial profession was shocked when the first edition of this book appeared in 1649 as a translation of the Latin pharmacopoeia. The translation angered the College of Physicians and Culpepper was declared as infringing on the physicians' rights because they held a monopoly on the official dispensatory and their secret remedies could be read in the vernacular. Although Culpepper was subject to continuous attacks by the physician, his book became quire popular and its use was widespread. Nicholas Culpepper (1616-1654), contemporary of William Harvey, is popularly regarded as the figurehead of alternative medicine, yet most historians of medicine simply refer to him as an uncritical quack and stargazer. He trained as an apothecary in London, and by producing an unauthorized critical translation of the London Dispensatory he became the enemy of the physicians. In the Civil War he joined the Parliamentarian forces and was wounded. He fought a duel and was accused of witchcraft. In 1652 he wrote his famous herbal, The English Physician and before that the first English textbook on midwifery and childcare, The English Midwife.

A well preserved book. ** Referenced by: ESTC R019808 / Wing C7502 *** "Nicholas Culpeper (probably born at Ockley, Surrey, 18 October 1616; died at Spitalfields, London, 10 January 1654) was an English botanist, herbalist, physician, and astrologer. His books include The English Physitian (1652), later known as the Complete Herbal (1653 ff.), which contains a store of pharmaceutical and herbal knowledge, and Astrological Judgement of Diseases from the Decumbiture of the Sick (1655), one of the most detailed documents on medical astrology in Early Modern Europe. He spent much of his life in outdoor cataloguing of hundreds of medicinal herbs. He criticized the methods of some contemporaries: "This not being pleasing, and less profitable to me, I consulted with my two brothers, Dr. Reason and Dr. Experience, and took a voyage to visit my mother Nature, by whose advice, together with the help of Dr. Diligence, I at last obtained my desire; and, being warned by Mr. Honesty, a stranger in our days, to publish it to the world, I have done it." Culpeper came of a long line of notabilities, including Thomas Culpeper, lover of Catherine Howard (also a distant relative), who was sentenced to death by Catherine's husband, King Henry VIII.
