(6) + 1182 + index, 4to, bound in light blind-stamped pigskin over boards, binding dated 1593 (four years earlier than the date of publication) in gilt together with the initials CWK on front board, raised bands and title lettered in ms, all edges blue, the binding is a very elaborate roll-pannelled blind stamping with a figure representing justice with the text 'lustice quisquis picturam lumine cernis' on the front board and 'Castalulit Magnam forme luccencia laudem' under the figure of a man on the back board, some early annotations on first free endpaper, title page and throughout the volume with many relevant under-linings, a name has been excised from the title page with no loss, Provenance: name plate inside front board of John Peters, wear to corners otherwise in very good condition with strong tight hinges, Paltheniana Sumtibus Haeredum Petri Fischeri, Francofurti, 1597. "Jacques Cujas (or Cujacius) (or as he called himself, Jacques de Cujas, 1520 - 4 October 1590) was a French legal expert. He was prominent among the legal humanists or mos gallicus school, which sought to abandon the work of the medieval commentators and concentrate on ascertaining the correct text and social context of the original works of Roman law. The life of Cujas was altogether that of a scholar and teacher. In the religious wars which filled all the thoughts of his contemporaries he steadily refused to take any part. Nihil hoc ad edictum praetoris, "this has nothing to do with the edict of the praetor," was his usual answer to those who spoke to him on the subject. His surpassing merit as a jurisconsult consisted in the fact that he turned from the ignorant commentators on Roman law to the Roman law itself. He consulted a very large number of manuscripts, of which he had collected more than 500 in his own library; but, unfortunately, he left orders in his will that his library should be divided among a number of purchasers, and his collection was thus scattered, and in great part lost." The first two of four volumes that constituted the first of several editions of Cujas' complete works. This scarce edition-we see no other example on the market at the time of writing- was meticulously edited and organised by Alexander Scot, a Scottish jurist based in France. Jacques Cujas (1522-1590), intellectual luminary of Renaissance Europe and the preeminent figure of the Mos Gallicus ("French School") of legal humanism, revolutionized jurisprudence by introducing rigorous philological and historical methods to read Roman law within its original social and cultural context. His lectures at the University of Bourges drew future statesmen and legal minds from across Europe, earning him the moniker Princeps Jurisconsultorum ("Prince of Legal Scholars"). His masterworks-notably his Paratitla (concise, analytical syntheses of Justinian's Digest and Codex) included here, and his extensive commentary restoring original manuscript texts-stripped centuries of medieval misinterpretations away to rebuild a pure, historically accurate framework of Western civil law. .…
