"En 1891, la duchesse d'Uzès, royaliste et catholique fervente, décide d'organiser pour son fils une expédition en Afrique, afin de tirer le jeune du…c "de la vie dispendieuse de la capitale et essayer de lui faire faire quelque ?uvre grandiose". Dans l'esprit de la bouillante princesse, il s'agit d'une sorte de Croisade, qui, au départ de Brazzaville permettrait d'atteindre l'Abyssinie en délivrant au passage Khartoum, occupé par les Madhistes depuis 1884. (?) Parti de Marseille en avril 1892, le duc d'Uzès parvient à Brazzaville le 12 juillet, sans avoir avoir pu imposer son autorité à ses compagnons (il n'a que 24 ans). L'expédition, dont l'objectif premier était tout pacifique, est détournée dans un but patriotique (?). Le duc meurt de la dysenterie à Cabinda le 20 juin alors qu'il s'apprêtait à regagner la France". Portrait du duc en frontispice, fac-simile de lettre, et nombreuses illustrations in et hors-texte.
