Brossura. Condition: new. Libro.

Rústica. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Nuevo. 01. LIBRO.

Encuadernación de tapa dura. Condition: Muy bien. 1ª Edición. In-12. (8)ff, 305 pp Bound in old vellum. Ex libris Hunt, Roope and Teage. At the verso of last page with a printer s engraved device. A rare first edition of opuscula. Elio Giulio Crotto or Crotti (Cremona, about 1495 - Ferrara, about 1582) was an Italian humanist, t…eacher and author of collections of Latin poetry. Processed by the Inquisition for heresy, he was condemned in 1568 to life imprisonment and pardoned in 1570. In 1564, dedicated to the duke of Parma Ottavio Farnese, the Crotto published in Ferrara his second collection of Latin poems, the Opuscula, in which seven Eidyllia dedicated to the poet Colombano Balletti, four Farraginum books, three Stromatum libri, three epilli and poem Veneres, dedicated to Giovanni Battista Giraldi, this work, whose dominant theme is love, of which he accentuates the erotic note so much to provoke some scandal in the commentators, prolonging him with a certain morbid complacency in the insistent description of sensual loves. It may seem curious that Giulio Crotto, who did not hesitate to write even erotic verses, was a clergyman, though he did not usually wear the cassock; on the other hand, if he had so much knowledge in the small but prestigious courts of Este and Gonzaga, he was not a courtier, but a humanist who earned his living by teaching Greek and Latin privately to young aristocrats from Ferrara. And he was not only concerned with amorous idylls in Latin meters: it was in Ferrara that he had to know, if not personally, at least the writings and some followers of that Giorgio Siculo, spiritual millenarian and anti-Trinitarian, a heretic inimical to Catholics and Protestants, who in that city He had lived several months, a guest of the humanist Nascimbene Nascimbeni, to whom he had written his great Book, and in Ferrara had finished his life in 1551, strangled in the Este Castle after his refusal to abjure and the consequent death sentence imposed by the Inquisition. The accession of the Crotto to the theories of the Sicilian Benedictine in 1567 cost him a process of which the acts were lost, excluding a group of testimonies to his defense, released especially by his former students, all young people of good family, who describe him as devout Catholic as not to accept them at his school if they did not use to go to Mass, if they did not confess and did not communicate, as he himself did. He admitted, however, that he had supported the heretical doctrine of Giorgio Siculo many years before, but had repudiated it, and had read forbidden books, which he had then burnt; also in his last writings of 1564, the Opuscola, one could find expressions of orthodox faith, as evidence of a repentance that has occurred for some time.
