With drawings by Mervyn Peake. London : Nicholson & Watson, 1943. First edition. Octavo, illustrated wrappers (small hole to upper panel, extending to a couple of leaves, lightly marked), pp. 28, illustrated by Peake. A very good copy. A satirical tract on enlistment into the military by English raconteur and queer icon Quentin Crisp. The narrative follows an enthusiastic kangaroo who tries to voluntarily enrol in the army but is subjected to a series of absurd, bureaucratic tests. The title itself is a clever play on the popular 1940 novel All This, and Heaven Too (and its contemporary phrase) combined with the name of Ernest Bevin, who served as the British Minister of Labour and National Service during WWII. Crisp tried to enrol in the English Army at the outbreak of the Second World War, but was rejected and declared exempt by the medical board on the grounds that they were "suffering from sexual perversion". The artist Mervyn Peake had applied to become a war artist however his application was rejected. He was conscripted into the Army, where he served first with the Royal Artillery, then with the Royal Engineers. After repeated requests to transfer to become a war artist, which were consistently refused, he suffered a nervous breakdown in April 1942, and was sent to Southport Hospital. They years 1943 - 1948 were some of Peake's most productive, and include this example, illustrating his fellow rejectee Crisp's satirical words, is a biting criticism of the bureaucracy of the army. The book was reproduced by The Mervyn Peake Society in 1978.…

First Edition. [Autobiography / British culture] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.217; [1]. Publisher's purple cloth titled in silver to spine, in photographic dust-jacket designed by Ivor Kaplin with the photographs by Simon Dell, Angus McBean, and Peter Hirst Smith, priced at 25s. Contents clean, edges slightly toned, jacket a little rubbed/dusty, biro price 8/6 over original. Generally a bright, attractive example. "I had decided to live not only as a self-confessed but as a self evident homosexual". The autobiography of one of the most unlikely yet most appropriate icons of Englishness, who must be appreciated if only for her apologetic explanation of her inability to answer any more questions whilst being interviewed: "I'm terribly sorry, I've come to the end of my personality." Basis for the acclaimed 1975 film for which John Hurt won the BAFTA for Best Actor. The title derives from Crisp's time working as a nude model in a government-funded art school.…

Described as an invitation to a marvelous party where the talk scintillates, the anecdotes unfailingly amuse, the glamorous guests stay late, and the genial host is a true wit who dispenses one-liners like a latter-day Oscar Wilde. In this funny, wise, self-mocking, and acutely perceptive book, Crisp reveals what style isn't and what style is, who has it, and who doesn't. The follow up to the authors famous autobiography.
