Billed as a guide to teach the young how to shoot, this book is both a history of hunting in the British Isles and a practical instructional manual for hunting in the Britain of its day (1846) when much of the best deer hunting forest was privately held by the aristocracy. In style and vocabulary, it is written for adults. The book discusses deer stalking, and the shooting of several species of grouse, partridge, pheasant, ptarmigan, quail, bustard, hare, rabbit, pigeon, woodcock, snipe, heron, dotterel, and wild water fowl. Animal hunting companions are also discussed including ferrets, hounds, terriers, retrievers, and setters. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 307 pages.
