The author was a deistic, liberal and controversial clergyman most infamous for his dispute with the Albany Church, Edinburgh in 1867. His best remembered publication was "Credibilia: Or, Discources on Questions of Christian Faith". Scott published others of his work, including this, after his death. The publisher published many pamphlets on deistic and freethought themes between 1862-'77 which are now very scarce.
