Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover, loos leaf. 218/400. 265 [3]pp. 8 plates, double-sided. 6pp., 54 plates, 7 folding. Original green cloth with gilt lettering on covers and spines, housed in green cloth slipcase. Commemorative publication with contributions of the Bank of Rome on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary of its founding. Text volume and por…tfolio with plates. Printed at the M. Danesi Graphic Arts Workshops, Rome. Unique enterprise documenting the excavation of the southeast corner of the Forum Pacis in Rome. In 1562 excavations yielded a number of marble slabs of a building which appeared to have housed administrative archives which was dated A.D. 203-211. Subsequent discoveries found additional fragments fitting against each other and it became apparent that these slabs presented a plan of the ancient city, representing app. one-tenth of the original surface, clearly incorporating the results of the administrative reforms of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. This expansive documentation is illustrated with numerous maps and plans as well as eight plates with b/w photographs of artifacts, maps and plans in the text volume, and 54 plates with lithographed plans and maps as well a as artifacts in same size portfolio. Contains various indices, e.g. concordances of various Bellori editions, topographical index of names and notable items, index of illustrations, and general index. Slicase with top and bottom panel missing, some chipping and wear along edges, and sunned. Slipcase poor, binding in very good, interior in fine condition.
