The case escalated when in 1966, a woman was abducted, sending police on a seven-day manhunt through the mountainous country that proved fatal for several people involved. The case was the inspiration for the film 'Cry in the Wild: The Taking of Peggy Ann'. The author has used the name 'Mary Lou Broderick', instead of the victims real name, Peggy Ann Bradnick, as he was unable to obtain her and others permission at time of publication.
