Owner bookplate on front endpaper. 1964 Hard Cover. 133, [3] pp. Italian text. A work of anatomical medicine by the 18th-19th century physician who studied at the University of Naples and… the Salerno medical school, worked as a surgeon at the Neapolitan Hospital for Incurables, taught anatomy for thirty years, and later became the personal physician to the King of Naples. In 1761 Cotugno published for distribution to friends a plate that traced the course of the nasopalatine nerve, which is responsible for sneezing. Antonio Scarpa acknowledged his priority in knowledge of this nerve. In the same year his anatomical dissertation De aquaeductibus auris humane internae, following the work of Guichard Joseph Duverney and Antonio Maria Valsalva and anticipating that of Hermann von Helmholtz, described the vestibule, semicircular canals, and cochlea of the osseus labyrinth of the internal ear, demonstrated the existence of the labyrinthine fluid, and formulated a theory of resonance and hearing. Cotugno wrote a classic monograph on sciatic neuralgia, and is also credited the discovery of the cerebrospinal fluid in 1774. He investigated smallpox, was deeply concerned with controlling pulmonary tuberculosis, and exemplified to many students the true investigative and selfless spirit in anatomy and medicine. The Ospedale Domenico Cotugno, hospital in Napoli is named for him. From Garrison-Morton entries (1549 & 1382) for his other works: "Cotugno is sometimes accredited with the discovery of the ?liquor Cotunnii?, the labyrinthine fluid, first noted by Pyl in 1742. He did, however, make important contributions to the knowledge on the structure and function of the ear, including the discovery of the aural aqueducts. The naso-palatine nerve and the columns in the osseous spiral lamina are named after him." and "Cotugno published a classic description of sciatica, which is useful even today. He recognized two types ? arthritic and nervous; the latter has been called ?Cotugno?s disease?, and his book is confined to that type. It includes the first clear description of the association of edema with proteinuria. Valsalva in 1692 briefly mentioned the cerebrospinal fluid, but ?Cotugno was the first to describe the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and to suggest that it was in continuity with the ventricular and cerebral subarachnoid fluids. However, his concept of the cerebral and spinal fluid, which is the beginning of its modern physiology, remained in obscurity until rediscovery by Magendie some 60 years later? (Clarke & O?Malley). For more information regarding this book and a translation of the section dealing with the cerebrospinal fluid, see the article by H. R. Viets in Bull. Inst. Hist. Med., 1935, 3, 701-38. English translation, London, 1775.

"There are two translations of the "De aquaeductibus" from the original Latin into Italian, one by Prof. V. Mangano published in Rome in 1932, and another by Dr.ssa Linda Ricciardi-Mitolo published in Bari in 1951. The…first is complete, the second contains the more relevant parts of Cotugno's monograph, from the Neapolitan version dated 1775. The present English translation by Eileen Mulligan follows Dr. Linda Ricciardi-Mitolo's selection. The facsimile copy of the Title Page of the text, some pages, key to illustrations and Cotugno's famous two Tables are from a copy of the Vienna edition dated 1774. The facsimile copy of the frontispiece portrait of Cotugno is from a copy of the "Opera Posthuma", both from the private library of one of the editors (S.I.). It is a pleasure for us to offer this first English translation of Cotugno's monograph to the participants of the XXXIV Workshop on Inner Ear Biology held in Apulia, 13th-16th September, 1997 and to the Members of the Italian Society of Audiology, which is one of the sponsors of this meeting." Introduction, Salvatore Iurato / Antonio Quaranta / Bari, 31st July, 1997.

He "did make important contributions to the knowledge on the structure and function of the ear, including the discovery of the aural aqueducts. The naso-palatine nerve and the columes in the osseous spiral lamina are named after him." Seine "Abhandlung vom nervigen Hüftweh" (so der schöne Titel der deutschen Übersetzung von 1792) kommentieren die Heirs of Hippocrates "In this, perhaps his most important work, he differentiates arthritis from nervous sciatica, gives the first detailed description of cerebrospinal fluid, and shows that the congealed protein in the urine of a nephritic patient is a diagnostic sign" (1026). Bibliotheca Walleriana 2180. Außerdem enthalten die Bände noch "De sedibus variolarum Syntagma" (1771), "a lucid description of the anatomy and pathgology of smallpox pustules. It is regarded as one of the finest dermatological works of the eighteenth century" (Heirs 1027).

SCARCE FIRST WIEN EDITION OF A REPORT ON THE LOCALIZATION OF THE SMALLPOX VIRUS, WRITTEN BY DOMENICO COTUGNO Domenico Cotugno 's (1736-1822) investigative report on the loc…alization of variola pustules, the smallpox virus. Cotugno describes the history and pathology of smallpox as well as providing a comprehensive description of the virus and ways to prevent the disfiguration of the face. First published in 1769 in Venice, 29 years before Jenner's discovery, he concludes that they are only external and do not affect internal organs. the internal mucous membranes however, were also affected when exposed to the air, as he was able to observe in a patient's prolapsed intestine and haemorrhoids. Cotugno's contribution to the study of the disease came at the cusp of Jenner's research and success with the smallpox vaccine, making this work an important part of the early struggle to eradicate the disease from the modern world and it "is regarded as one of the finest dermatological works of the eighteenth century." Hair of Hippocrates Cotugno was professor of surgery and anatomy in Naples and he is best known for his studies, especially in the field of neurology. "In the early 19th century, his reputation as a physician was such that, as the saying went, ''no one in Naples could die without a passport from Cotugno''.; Extending his interests to preventive medicine and public health, Cotugno became a pioneer in epidemiology. First Edition! "Cotugno's dissertation, written when he was twenty-four, recorded his discovery of the aural aqueducts (cochleae and vestibuli) and of t…he cochlear duct. It also contained his highly important account of the labyrinthine fluid or liquor Cotunnii, which he is sometimes credited with discovering, although the fluid was first noted by Pyl in 1742. Cotugno was the first to establish that the fluid completely fills the cavities of the labyrinth (dethroning the ancient physiological concept of aer innatus), and proposed the first theory of hearing in which the labyrinthine fluid--a fundamental element in modern theories--was taken into account."
